About
Sam Gale is young professional arranger, conductor, and producer whose primary focus is linking artists with orchestras to form unlikely collaborations and uniquely curated projects. Sam is grateful to have conducted, and have his arrangements performed and recorded, in some of the UK’s most prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall, the Barbican Centre, Abbey Road Studios, Maida Vale Studios, London's O2 Arena, and Birmingham Symphony Hall.
Trained classically as a trombonist, Sam studied jazz composition/arranging at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and is grateful to have had mentorship from Scott Stroman, Jules Buckley, and Simon Wills.
During his time at Guildhall, Sam founded the 85-piece jazz and pop orchestra Capital Orchestra, for which he was their conductor and arranger. Capital Orchestra announced their debut with a 3-part series at LSO St Luke’s before collaborating with London-based jazz quartet Lydian Collective at Cadogan Hall in October 2019. During the pandemic in 2020, Sam initiated several online collaborations for the orchestra featuring Mark Lettieri of Snarky Puppy, and singer-songwriter Elli Ingram.
Away from Capital Orchestra, Sam is grateful for the versatile work as an arranger and composer. In 2023, his arrangements were featured at the BBC Proms with a programme of music by Jon Hopkins in collaboration with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Singers, and Jules Buckley. Earlier in 2023, he was awarded runner-up in the John Dankworth big band composition prize.
